Return to Learn

The faculty and staff of Friend School are looking very forward to returning to school on August 13, 2020. We have a Plan A and a Plan B so that we are hopefully prepared to meet whatever challenges may come our way.  It is our desire to bring some normalcy back to our students and families.

We are very grateful for your support and patience as we plan and work toward having safeguards in place to protect all our students.  You will find common elements in most plans schools are posting.  These include social distancing; handwashing; sanitizing buildings and buses; masks being made available; and lots of time invested into discussing the importance of these measures.

Even though academics are very important, our top priority continues to be keeping our students, families, and community safe and healthy.  Please know our plan will continue to be a work in progress as we are trying to stay current on the latest information from the Oklahoma State Department of Education, the Center of Disease Control, The World Health Organization, and our local health organizations in Grady County.

Our plan involves a couple options - one involves students returning to school for instruction.  A second option is a virtual one for those families that have high risk family members or have someone in their household who may have contracted COVID 19.  The District is planning to use the Acellus Learning Management System coupled with a free resource from the State called Exact Path.  Each of these platforms will serve our needs well, and will also prove helpful should there be an outbreak of COVID 19, and there is a need for a temporary school closure.

The following information will hopefully help give you a look at our day and the safeguards we have put into place for our students.  Please feel free to call our office with any additional questions you may have after reading our current plan.

Morning Arrival:

If your child rides a BUS to school -

  • Buses will run routes as normal as possible.

  • All parents who are able are strongly encouraged to transport their students to and from school.

  • Hand Sanitizer will be available on the bus.

  • Students will have assigned seats.

  • Buses will be disinfected after every trip.

  • Students in Pre K will go to the cafeteria for breakfast. Teachers will pick up their classes and take them to their classrooms.

  • Students in Grades 4 - 8 who are eating breakfast will go to the cafeteria.  A teacher will come for those students and will take them to their classroom.

  • Kindergarten - 3rd Grade will have breakfast in their classrooms.

  • All students will have their temperatures taken as they enter their classroom.

  • Any temperature above 100 degrees: students will be moved to a waiting room, and parents will be contacted to take them home.

  • Hand Sanitizer stations will be located at each door and the entrance to each classroom.

In the Classrooms:

  • Masks will be encouraged and will be made available for students.

  • Students will be socially distanced as much as possible.

  • Classroom seating charts will be made available for each class.

  • Each student will have his/her own individual supplies.

  • Hand sanitizer will be available in all classrooms and used at various times throughout the day.

  • Students will wipe down their desk area at the end of the class period or day.

  • The building will be cleaned thoroughly each day.  All high traffic surfaces will be disinfected daily.

At lunch, students will be separated by classes at a safe distance with no more than 50 students in the cafeteria at one time.

  • All tables and seats will be sanitized after each use.

  • Lunch will be limited by class to maintain social distancing between students.

  • Students will be assigned a seat in the cafeteria

  • All condiments will be served by the cafeteria staff.

  • All cafeteria staff will wear gloves and a mask.

  • Students may sit outside when weather permits.

Recess Time:

  • Recess times will be staggered to limit the number of classes and students on the playground at one time.

  • No outside toys/equipment will be allowed at school or on the playground.

Physical Education:

  • P.E. will be held outdoors as much as possible.

  • Any equipment used during class will be disinfected after each class period.

  • Students will bring water bottles with them and may refill the bottles at the fountains.

  • All high traffic surfaces will be disinfected daily.

  • All visitors will be screened and temperatures taken before they are allowed to enter into the building.

  • Only limited visitors will be allowed in the building.

  • Parents picking up students during the day will need to call the office.  The office will take the child outside to the parent.

  • Parents are asked to stay in their vehicles during drop off and pick up.

Students/Teachers Who May Become Ill:

  • Any student who enters with a fever or develops a fever during the day will be taken to a designated waiting room until picked up by a parent.

  • If an individual has any symptoms related to COVID-19 they will need to be symptom free for 10 days, fever free for 72 hours without medication, or produce a letter from a licensed physician/ health department of a negative test before returning to school

  • Any student or teacher who has had close contact with an individual who tests positive, which is defined in the CDC Guidelines as within 6 feet for 15 minutes or longer, will have to self-quarantine for 14 calendar days from the last time of contact.

Confirmed Case Outbreak:

  • In the event Friend Public School or the Friend Community experiences an outbreak of confirmed COVID-19 cases, additional steps and precautions will be implemented.  These precautions can range anywhere from meals in classrooms, mandatory face masks while outside the classroom, to school closure/virtual instruction for all students.  These decisions are not taken lightly and all options will be considered.  The health and safety of our students and community will continue to be our top priority.  We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we chart our way through these unknown waters.

Virtual Option:

  • Available for students in grades PK-8.

  • This fully online option is for those families that have high risk members or have someone in their household who has contracted Covid-19.

  • A Curriculum Management System will be used for online instruction and will be supervised by a certified teacher.  We will be using the following platforms:

    • Acellus

    • Exact Path

  • Contact with students and parents will be made by phone, email, and text messaging.

  • Assignments, tests, and lessons will have to be completed daily and in a timely manner to meet attendance requirements.

  • Daily attendance requirements will still apply to virtual students.

  • Technology and internet accessibility will be provided as needed and where available.

  • Students who use the virtual option can participate in athletics and extracurricular activities.

  • This option will require a pre-enrollment meeting with Mrs. Schmidt.
