Continuous Learning Proposal

March 24, 2020

Dear Falcon Families,

State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister announced yesterday that she will be proposing a Continuous Learning Plan to the Oklahoma State Board of Education at their meeting this week on Wednesday, March 25, 2020.  The plan will call for completing the school year without school buildings being reopened during the global pandemic.

Extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary actions.  We wanted to make you aware of this possibility to allow you time to begin to make plans for your family in adjusting to these changes.  I know this is not how any of us planned to end the year, but at this time we must continue to work together to finish strong in the midst of uncertain times.

Instead of traditional instruction, education will resume with distance learning.  Distance learning will look different from district to district and even from one grade level to another.  A framework is being created to help guide us. Friend has a very creative and innovative faculty and staff who are already thinking of ideas and planning for alternative ways of delivering instruction to engage students in learning.  We are looking very forward to reconnecting with students on April 6th.

The OSDE will offer a variety of resources and guidance for districts to pursue distance learning. In addition, the Oklahoma State Department of Education is exploring how federal assistance could bolster digital connectivity for some districts. OETA, Oklahoma’s educational public TV network, will also provide help. In partnership with OSDE, OETA will broadcast instructional daytime programming for the state’s Pre-K-12 students.

The State received a waiver to suspend Oklahoma State Testing this spring.  There are other waivers being requested at both the state and federal level.  Several will be taken to the Oklahoma State Board of Education Meeting this week.

A Grab and Go service is being provided  Monday - Friday between 9:30 and 10:30 each morning.  We ask you to come to the Auditorium drop off area where we will have a staff member to bring the Grab and Go bags to your vehicle.  We will serve a sack lunch and a sack with breakfast items at the same time. Your child/children do have to be in the vehicle to be served.   Delivery for those unable to pick up will be available on a limited basis by calling the school between 8:30 and 9:00 each morning.

There have been many to volunteer to help with our meal service.  Thank you so much!

We want to be responsible for the safeguards recommended by the CDC, so we are limiting the number of workers to just the minimum needed.

My heart goes out to our students, teachers and staff, and families as we all look forward to events at the end of each school year. Even though we cannot come together in groups or have extracurricular activities at this time, we will do our best to come up with some creative ways to capture special moments and highlight the accomplishments that have occurred this past year.  Health and safety must continue to be our top priority as we work to stop the spread of the coronavirus in our state and communities.

After the Oklahoma State Board Meeting tomorrow, we will be updating our FAQ’s. There is also a great deal of information on the Oklahoma State Department of Education website, the Oklahoma Department of Health, and the CDC website. We will continue to get information out on our website, Facebook, and the automated caller.

I appreciate your support of our school and the patience you have had with the changes and challenges we are facing.  We are seeing a lot of Falcon pride! Please let us know if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions as to how we can all work together to encourage, meet needs, and again finish strong as we complete the 2020 school year.

Sincerely,

Cindy Schmidt
